He is a founding member (1994) of the Hydrogen Research Institute (HRI) and its executive director (2005-2018). He is Chairholder of the NSERC Industrial Research Chair in hydrogen purification, transport and storage (2002-2015) and professor at the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (1992-2018).
Professor Chahine acted as the scientific director of the NSERC Strategic Pan-Canadian Network (H2CAN) on production, purification, storage and infrastructures of hydrogen which he initiated (2006-2015). The Network included research groups and centers across 14 Canadian universities, 25 industrial partners, and 5 government laboratories.
Professor Chahine acted as a Canadian expert member of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Hydrogen Implementing Agreement (HIA) 1991-2014, and also for the International Partnership for the Hydrogen Economy (IPHE) up to 2010. He was a member of the Advisory Committee for ISO-TC 197 on hydrogen (2010-2016), and member of the Board of the Canadian Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Association (CHFCA) from 2010 to 2018, and member of the board of Canadian Urban Transit Research & Innovation Consortium (CUTRIC) from 2016-2018. He also takes part on many committees related to energy and hydrogen at the national and international level, and chaired the scientific committee of national and international hydrogen conferences.
His principal interests are in the field of hydrogen energy and more particularly in novel energy materials and storage system engineering. Professor Chahine is author and co-author of more than 350 scientific publications, technical reports and conference proceedings; 4 patents and 2 books. He co-authored a top cited paper in Scripta Materiala 2007-2011. He was awarded the Prix d’excellence en recherche de l’Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières for his outstanding contribution in research (2009), and the IEA-HIA Project Prize 2010. He was admitted to the “Circle of Excellence of the Université du Québec” in 2012, and awarded the Medal of the 50th anniversary of Université du Québec in 2018.
